Casting The Spotlight On Mentorship

The fourth instalment of Learning Forum was held virtually on 16 March 2021. Professor John Loughran, Emeritus Professor at Monash University and the Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor, was the keynote speaker. Professor Loughran is internationally renowned for his expertise on Teacher Education. He delivered a thought-provoking keynote address entitled “Mentoring Students of Teaching: Insights into the complex work of learning to teach”.

Professor Low Ee Ling, the National Institute of Education’s (NIE) Dean of Teacher Education, opened the forum. Twenty papers from 14 schools, three NTU-NIE Teaching Scholars Programme (TSP) graduates, two partner universities, and one NIE staff member, were presented as part of the programme. Three former student teachers were also invited to share their practicum learning journey.

The highlight of the virtual forum was the launch of the book “Becoming a Teacher: Reflection, Inquiry and Identity” by Professor Low. This is the fourth publication under the “Professional Practice and Inquiry” book series.

Professor Low also took the opportunity to honour all the Cooperating Teachers and School Coordinating Mentors who have worked tirelessly to support and guide our student teachers during their practicum. In 2020, most of the mentoring had been done in a virtual or home-based learning environment due to the pandemic.

The Learning Forum garnered positive feedback from the turnout of 180 participants. The session was organised by the NIE Office of Teacher Education (OTE).
