International Practicum Experience - The Canadian Way!

Meet student teachers, Ms Annie Capretta and Mr Adrian Chong. They were among four exchange students from Queen’s University in Canada who opted to do their International Practicum (IP) at NIE from 25 March and 5 April 2019.

“Despite the many choices, I decided to come to Singapore because I thought this would be the perfect place to experience Asian culture and sure enough, it was! I also was curious about Singapore’s competitive and innovative education system. This sounded like something I had to see for myself, so I applied to the NIE exchange programme through my university. My biggest takeaway from the IP was learning the importance of classroom management, staff collaboration and professional development. I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for cultural differences.”

“Getting to work on my IP at NIE was a great learning opportunity. I opted for this experience because I wanted to learn from Singapore’s education system in the local context. This trip has taught me a lot about innovative pedagogies and teaching strategies that I can implement in the future, and I’m thankful for the partnership between Queen’s University and NIE, and to my cooperating teachers who gave me the freedom and opportunity to teach and interact with their classes. The meaningful and valuable lessons will continue to stay with me throughout my teaching career.”
