NTU is proud to be the first and only university in Singapore to have a campus art trail. Since its launch in October 2018 by the NTU Museum, the number of highlights on the art trail has risen from 42 to 57. This year, the trail has been extended to include selected artworks from the NIE art collection. Enhancing the visitor experience is a 190-page eBook (Campus Art Trail: Nanyang Technological University, Second Edition. 2019) featuring artworks found along the art trail.
At an unveiling ceremony for a new sculpture titled Loop held on 15 August 2019, NTU President Professor Subra Suresh announced the completion of the 2019 edition of the campus art trail map and e-publication. | Read More |
The Loop was inspired by the beautiful nature on campus and the architectural design of NTU’s learning hub, The Arc, this 4.5-metre-tall interdisciplinary sculpture boasts the lively movement of 1,200 butterflies, fluttering on an almost invisible Möbius loop. The movement is self-sustained by the environment, thus making it an eco-friendly work of art.
Denizens of NIE can continue their trail with a tour of The Arc along Nanyang Drive. This eco-friendly building design was built to resemble a piano or harpsichord, with its spiral stairs and curved structures.
Follow the trail towards the Experimental Medicine Building, which houses nine inspiring artworks that include the Red Solace, which doubles up as a bench at the passenger pick-up point, and the Tète-à-tète, a set of comfortable seats with high backrests to offer a sense of privacy without feelings of seclusion.
Nearby, at the Nanyang Auditorium, look out for a Chinese ink painting and a spiralling sculpture created respectively by Lim Tze Peng and Anthony Poon. Take a short stroll across to the North Spine, where you will find the Media Art Nexus, a platform for new media exhibits, and Fern, an interesting sculptural work that can function as a seating area for 12 people or more!
