As with many public events in recent months, the latest “Education In The City” lecture, organised by the National Institute of Education in collaboration with the National Library Board, was conducted “live” via Zoom for the first time on 13 July 2020. “COVID-19 and the New Normal for Children with Special Needs” was the theme of the lecture, which drew over 50 online participants.
Kicking off the lecture was Dr Sylvia Choo, a paediatrician at the Department of Child Development, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, who spoke about the "COVID-19 and the new normal: What does it mean for my child with special needs?”
The next speaker was Dr Kenneth Poon, Associate Dean (Education Research) at the Office of Education Research and Co-Centre Director at the Centre for Research in Child Development at the National Institute of Education, who spoke about "Making the time spent at home with your child with special needs count."
Both speakers drew on their research and school experiences to offer perspectives on many education issues that emerged during the pandemic, such as reduced community access and long periods of staying at home. They also shared practical tips on what can be done to help children with special needs, especially those experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation due to sudden changes in routines.
The event concluded with a lively question and answer session moderated by Dr Shaun Goh, Research Scientist and Clinical Psychologist at the Centre for Research in Child Development at the National Institute of Education.
