A 194-page monograph documenting research on critical thinking in Singapore schools and exploring issues in the sociology of curriculum and curriculum reform was among 12 publications selected to win the 2018 American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Critics’ Choice Book Award in September.
The award-winning work by Dr Leonel Lim, Assistant Professor at the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group, is titled "Knowledge, control and critical thinking in Singapore: State ideology and the politics of pedagogic recontextualisation". A NIE-NTU Overseas Graduate Scholar, Dr Lim completed his doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2014, he received the American Educational Research Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award in the field of curriculum studies. He has published in journals such as Curriculum Inquiry, Journal of Curriculum Studies, Journal of Education Policy, Critical Studies in Education, and Cambridge Journal of Education. His recent edited books (with Michael W. Apple) include The strong state and curriculum reform (Routledge, 2016) and Critical studies of education in Asia (Routledge, 2019).
Dr Lim completed both his Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Master of Arts at NIE, and was a former primary school teacher. He currently serves as Associate Editor for Pedagogies: An International Journal, and is also editor of the newly commissioned Routledge book series, Politics of Education in Asia.
