Every year, the Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) Academic Group organises the E.W. Barker Challenge in memory of the late Mr Edmund William (E.W.) Barker: a statesman, scholar and sportsman. This annual event seeks to raise awareness and celebrate the legacy of Mr E.W. Barker and his contributions to the local sporting scene. This year’s Challenge was held on 28 March 2018 at NIE.
Ms Carla Barker and Ms Deborah Barker, the daughters of the late Mr Barker, were present as the Guests of Honour. Associate Professor Liu Woon Chia, former Dean of Teacher Education; Professor John Wang, former Associate Dean or Education Research; Associate Professor Koh Koon Teck, Head of PESS; and other distinguished guests were also in attendance to grace the occasion. | Read More |
This year the Challenge comprised of a fusion of cross-fit exercises and an obstacle course. Competing teams of four members each were to complete the course within the fastest time possible. A total of 80 participants, including 14 university teams and six junior college teams, took part in the Challenge.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious E.W. Barker Scholarship to Ms Low Hui Min and Mr Keith Saw, both Sport Science and Management (SSM) students. The scholars each received $8,000 for their exemplary academic achievements, sport performance and leadership qualities.
Like their predecessors, Ms Low and Mr Saw will pay it forward by organising the succeeding event with support from their peers in the SSM Society and PESS Club.
