SALT: Scaling New Heights in Bhutan
  • The SALT team departing for Paro, Bhutan, led by Assoc Professor Chow Jia Yi (extreme right) and supported by Ms Jessica Tan - Wong Lai Fong (fifth from the left) and Mr Eric Yeo Eng Hock (second from the left) from NIE’s Office of Teacher Education.

NIE’s Service and Leadership Training (SALT) programme provides student teachers with a unique opportunity for both personal development and international exposure in interdisciplinary training. Since its inception in 2016, 84 student teachers have benefitted from the overseas immersion experiences and done meaningful work in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

For its sixth instalment, the programme saw student teachers, staff and faculty travelling to Paro, Bhutan for the very first time this year. 14 student teachers across NIE’s pre-service programmes participated in the project, which took place from 29 September to 5 October 2019 during the recess week.

The project was organised in collaboration with the Paro College of Education (PCE), Royal University of Bhutan, and a local school, Utpal Academy. Our student teachers were given the chance to teach various lessons to both junior and senior students in Utpal Academy. In addition, the team was engaged in meaningful conversations with Bhutanese teachers and student teachers from PCE.
