Celebrating 10 Years Of Building Educational Bridges

It is the 10th anniversary of the “Building Educational Bridges: Innovation for School Leaders” programme this year. A group of 20 school leaders from Singapore and the United Kingdom celebrated the milestone with Director-General of Education, Ministry of Education (MOE), Mr Wong Siew Hoong; British High Commissioner to Singapore, His Excellency Scott Wightman; Dean, Graduate Studies and Professional Learning, NIE, Prof Christine Goh; and other senior officers from MOE on 25 January 2018.

At the closing dinner, two participants shared some of their key takeaways from the programme. Said Mr Tan Keng Joo, Principal, Chua Chu Kang Secondary School, Singapore: “This Building Educational Bridges programme serves to bring people together just like a physical bridge. It helps to initiate personal networking, strengthen friendships and thereby establish a platform for partnership. But for what purpose? It is for the advancement of education for the benefit of our children. Whether in the UK or Singapore, we put the education of children at the heart of all we do. How we navigate the challenges and move towards our common objective will certainly differ. Yet we have the same desire to help every child realise his or her potential and succeed in life.”

Said Mrs Lesley Coulthurst, Head Teacher, Toynton-All-Saints Primary School, United Kingdom: “Our week began looking at paradoxes and since then we have explored how autonomous creativity can work effectively within a centralized system. Singapore’s students have excelled in PISA tests yet we also saw how Singapore recognise the need for creativity and innovation in order to continue to prepare children for the world. It has been an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to collaborate meaningfully together this week with our Singapore counterparts. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The “Building Educational Bridges: Innovation for School Leaders” programme offers experienced school leaders the opportunity to explore key leadership issues in national and international contexts. It is the result of collaboration between NIE; Ministry of Education, Singapore; British Council; and Department for Education, United Kingdom.
