Bringing Stories To Life Through Digital Technologies
by Dr Galyna Kogut, Office of Education Research, NIE
Digital storytelling or creating stories through digital means stems from the act of storytelling which exists since the times humanity remembers itself. The need of self-expression as well as that of sharing knowledge and experience found various ways to manifest in history and everyday life through different types of stories: oral, written, and now digital, which includes video images, audio and might not be limited only to these two as the technologies grow and develop rapidly.
In this century, if meaning making and critical evaluation of meanings offered by various sources of information are taken as the key objectives in modern educational system, there is an increasing importance and an obvious need for inviting of digital storytelling as a viable mode of learning, both for students and teachers. With growing accessibility and availability of digital technologies and their increasing importance for obtaining knowledge and information in students and teachers, there is a proportional need in making digital storytelling a part of classroom practices. Digital story can be a convenient and relatively fast way of putting ideas, thoughts into a digestible form which can be shared with others. It is also a tangible way of making connections between past and present, engaging with pedagogical discourse and students' and teachers' personal experience.
However attractive the use of technologies for storytelling maybe, it is important for teachers and educators to understand what pedagogical goals can and should be achieved through digital storytelling in classrooms and in teaching in general. The way digital stories can be used by teachers might vary according to their instructional objectives, access to resources, their beliefs and knowledge as well as students' interests. The importance of accepting digital storytelling as an efficient way of learning is only the beginning of the process. There is much work to be done to find out how to apply digital stories and use their potential in regular classroom practices, how digital stories can be best supported and their use become sustainable over a long period of time for the benefit of student learning, expression of student voices and meaning making.
