Sharing Lessons on Multimodality in Education
The Multimodality Special Interest Group (MM SIG) under the NIE Office of Education Research (OER) has organised a series of professional learning webinars in the first quarter of 2022, featuring different disciplines with a common focus on multimodality and education.
In January, Assistant Professor Victor Lim Fei from the English Language and Literature (ELL Academic Group spoke about the role of images in international and Singapore literacy assessments. He also shared research findings on the image-language relationship, and the importance of alignment between curricular goals, teaching and learning assessments, and multimodal literacy.
In February, Professor Øystein Gilje from the University of Oslo's Research, Innovation and Competence Development Unit shared his findings on multimodality and assessment in one-to-one classrooms. His observational study raises interesting questions on how multimodal texts can be applied to improve learning in students.
In March, Associate Professor Eugene Dairianathan from the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Academic Group presented his work in exploring music and performance and their expression of the sacred space. He also cited the narratives of a Singaporean extreme metal band who had relied on an ancient Sanskrit text, the Ramayana, and Javanese Gamelan as (re)sources for their music.
