A group of international students from New Zealand and Japan were in Singapore recently for their international practicum at NIE. To welcome and orientate the students, NIE’s International and School Partnerships unit, supported by volunteers from the Teaching Scholars Programme club, rolled out an inaugural SG trail for exchange students. The trail covers prominent landmarks in the Civic District to give our visitors an appreciation of Singapore’s colonial past as well as its impressive city skyline.

Said Ms Shannon Avello, a student from the University of Waikato in New Zealand: “I would like to thank the NIE staff and student for this wonderful experience to learn about Singapore and discover new things about this culture. I am enjoying Singapore so far and I am excited to do more.”
Ms Kaitlyn Mehrtens, also from the University of Waikato, added: “I had such a fun day exploring the National Gallery and learning about the history of Singapore. This is such an interesting place!”
For Mr Hiroyoshi Nishizawa, a student from Japan’s University of Fukui, Singapore’s local cuisine was among the highlights of his trip. “I’ve enjoyed the SG trail. The brief history of Singapore, the stories shared by my NIE student buddy Jopescu, as well as what I saw at the National Gallery, have all been interesting. Most of all, the chance to try various Singaporean food was also a valuable experience for me.”
Agreeing with her cohorts was Ms Natala Pettit, a University of Waikato student: "I really enjoyed the SG trail as I got a taste of Singapore culture through learning about past history and trying local delicacies. It was very beneficial as I became more familiar and knowledgeable about Singaporean culture.”
