With the renewal of the Memorandum of Agreement for the Master of Arts in Leadership and Educational Change (MALEC), National Institute of Education (NIE) has renewed the strategic international partnership with Teachers College, Columbia University, from 2017 to 2021.

The MALEC programme is one of NIE’s signature programmes that is jointly offered and awarded by NIE, Nanyang Technological University(NTU) and Teachers College, Columbia University. The programme was established in 2010 with the goal of expanding the existing leadership capabilities and capacities within educational agencies and preparing the next generation of educational leaders for Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region. The MALEC is the first programme worldwide to offer a unique dual focus on organisational leadership and leadership in curriculum, teaching and learning. Its distinguishing features are in building cross-national learning communities and developing new cultures for collaboration through acquiring local and global perspectives.

Since the first intake in January 2013, a total of 33 students have graduated from the MALEC programme, including nine Ministry of Education (MOE) scholars. Graduates of the programme have gone on to lead innovation and change in varied areas of teacher and school leadership as reform activists in schools, tertiary institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations. Among the graduates, one is currently Director, Guidance, MOE, three are Principals of MOE schools, and others serve as senior educators in various settings. Elis Tan Lee Ching, Principal, Rosyth School, was the Valedictorian for Nanyang Technological University’s 2016 Convocation. Reshu Aryal Dhungana, Director of Habeli Outdoor Learning Center in Kathmandu, Nepal was conferred the NTU Alumni Achievement Award for 2017.
