Fostering A Community Of Graduate Learners

An online initiative that allows NIE higher degree students to post questions and share learning experiences is now available to all graduate students. Known as ‘Higher Degrees Connect on Blackboard’, the collaborative platform enables graduate students to participate in several communities of learning by logging into their GENIEUS accounts.

For a start, the current learning communities for higher degree students are focused on Academic Writing, SPSS, R Programming, MATLAB and Structural Equation Modelling. Within each group, students as well as faculty members can share their learning through the discussion board, as well as posting questions they may have on the topic. There are also groups dedicated to sports and other recreational activities, opening up the possibility for organising events and other get-togethers.

The initiative is intended as a source of learning support for graduate students. Assistant Professor Adrian Kee, Assistant Dean of Higher Degrees by Research explained the rationale for the new initiative: “Very often, we have graduate students who encounter difficulties in certain aspects of their research, and they remain stuck with the problem for a long time. By becoming a member of our Community of Learners, help is just a forum post away. The platform is a great way for higher degree learners to pool resources, expedite information share and solve problems – fast!”

“You may have heard of this saying: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together’. With the aid of ‘Higher Degrees Connect on Blackboard’, our graduate student community will soon see that it’s possible to go faster and further when they learn together!” Professor Kee added.
