To commemorate the legacy of Mr Edmund William Barker, the Barker family and the Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) Academic Group have launched a commemorative book on 12 October 2021. Mr Teo Chee Hean, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, was present at the book launch as the Guest-of-Honour.
The publication, titled “Legacy of Edmund William (E.W.) Barker”, was edited by PESS faculty members, Associate Professor Koh Koon Teck, Professor Michael Chia and Dr Chung Ho Jin. The 118-page book spotlights Mr Barker’s illustrious achievements and contributions for the future of sports in Singapore, coupled with photos featuring the many E.W. Barker events held over the years. It also chronicles the collective impact of the E.W. Barker Professorship and Scholarship whilst providing invaluable insights into the sports arena in Singapore through the lenses of the ten former E.W. Barker professors and past scholars.
Associate Professor Koh, who is Head of PESS, believes the book will inspire readers through its narrative about how the dedication of one individual has provided a legacy for future generations. “It is heartening to read about the many significant milestones in Mr Barker’s life, and the accounts of those who have benefited from the Professorship and Scholarship schemes despite their diverse backgrounds and interests,” he said.
The E.W. Barker Bursary was also announced by NIE in conjunction with the book launch. The bursary is aimed at nurturing talented and committed undergraduates pursuing sport science and sport management.
The book launch concluded with the formal presentation of the E.W. Barker Scholarship to eight Sport Science and Management students, who were the award recipients in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
