On 12 November 2021, NIE Director Professor Christine Goh delivered her annual address to the NIE community and alumni on the theme, “Forging Ahead: Growing our Academic Impact & Reputation to Lead the Future of Education”. About 600 faculty, staff and alumni representatives tuned in online to the ‘live’ broadcast.

Professor Goh began her speech by celebrating the success and key achievements of the institute and its faculty, students and staff over the past academic year. Highlights included the successful move towards 100% ‘blended’ courses institute-wide; the redesigned ‘Teachers as Thinkers’ series for student teachers; the launch of NIE Education Launchpad, a new short video series showcasing NIE’s research and faculty expertise; as well as the latest faculty and staff development initiatives such as structured mentoring for assistant professors.

In the second part of her speech, Professor Goh provided updates on the implementation of Learning Initiatives for the Future of Education at NIE NTU Singapore (LIFE@NIE SG™), including the formation of steering committees to drive the development of the five Strategic Growth Areas (SGAs) under LIFE@NIE SG®. She also announced the launch of a new microsite for LIFE@NIE SG® (lifeniesg.nie.edu.sg).

Professor Goh then highlighted upcoming developments and key plans for NIE, including new centres and hubs for assessment and evaluation, artificial intelligence for education, and character and citizenship education. A key initiative for 2022 will be the launch of a new leadership development programme to mentor, support and develop leaders and aspiring leaders at NIE.

With the NIE Strategic Vision 2022 (NIE 2022) moving into its final year in 2022, Professor Goh also updated that a new three-year NIE strategic plan, tentatively named NIE 2025, was being developed. NIE 2025 will be an extension of NIE 2022, expanding upon current key strategic thrusts, and developed in alignment with MOE and NTU strategic priorities. It will focus on further raising the academic reputation and impact of NIE both locally and internationally.

In her conclusion, Professor Goh reiterated that people are at the heart of what NIE has achieved and will continue to achieve. She encouraged all staff and faculty to work together to take NIE to the next level as a leader of the future of education in and beyond Singapore.

Conversation with NIE Senior Leadership

Professor Goh’s address was followed by a 45-minute online dialogue with the NIE senior leadership (NSL). Mr Paul Lincoln, Head of Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) Academic Group, moderated the session and faculty and staff were invited to post their questions on Slido. It was a lively conversation with the NSL responding to queries on topics ranging from talent retention and professional development, mental well-being of students and staff, to challenges facing NIE in the next three to five years.
