Celebrating 10
Years Together
with UCL IOE

On 4 September 2017, ten years of partnership on the Doctor in Education (EdD) (Dual Award) programme between NIE, NTU, and Institute of Education, University College London (UCL IOE) came to formal completion. This milestone moment was marked with a visit to UCL by Professor Christine Goh (Dean, Graduate Programmes and Professional Learning) and Associate Professor Hairon Salleh (Assistant Dean, Doctor in Education), who met with Professor Martin Oliver (Head, IOE Centre for Doctoral Education). During the visit, plans for further collaboration and partnership were discussed.

The EdD (Dual Award) programme began in 2007 and prominent local alumni include: Dr Gog Soon Joo, Group Director and Chief Research Officer, Training Partners Group, SkillsFuture Singapore (2013),; Dr Lim Lai Cheng, Executive Director, Singapore Management University Academy (2014); Dr Tham Kum Ying, Senior Consultant and Education Director, Medical Board (Education), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (2017); and Dr Theresa Thor, Deputy Principal (Curriculum), Raffles Institution (2017). Distinguished international alumni include Dr Johnny Go, Society of Jesus, The Philippines (2016).

The present NIE Doctor in Education (EdD) is based within Singapore’s national education institute, which has a strong reputation in teacher education and educational research. With the mission of nurturing leaders for change in the education professions, the NIE EdD took its inspiration from the EdD (Dual Award) programme and received its first intake of students in 2012. The impetus for the inception of the NIE EdD was the desire to create a professional doctorate for leaders in education that is uniquely NIE. The current programme with a total of nine specialisations is a significant step forward in expanding the impact of the NIE EdD as a doctorate for professionals in education and education-related fields.
