To honour the late Professor Lee Sing Kong who passed away in May 2017, NTU has established an endowment fund in his name. The Lee Sing Kong Endowment Fund will support professorships in early childhood education at NIE and bursaries for needy students.
The late Professor Lee had served as NTU’s Vice President of Alumni and Advancement, as well as Director of NIE. He was a widely respected academic known for his lifelong dedication to education and passion for innovation.
Professor Lee played an instrumental role in advancing teaching training in Singapore when he led NIE from 2006 to 2014. Under his strategic leadership, he had successfully placed NIE on the world map as Singapore scored successes in the global Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings in mathematics, science, and reading, among other global league tables.
On 18 November 2017, a Charity Concert in support of the Lee Sing Kong Endowment Fund was organised at Shanghai Dolly, a live-music venue at Clarke Quay, Singapore. Initiated by the NTU Business and Corporate Partners (BCP) Programme Committee, proceeds from the Charity Concert will benefit the fund.
In his speech during the event, Professor Bertil Andersson, President of NTU, paid tribute to the late Professor Lee and remembered him as an academic who had made significant contributions to education, as well as a colleague with a big heart and boundless energy. President Prof Andersson also expressed his gratitude to supporters of the Lee Sing Kong Endowment Fund and sponsors of the Charity Concert for their generosity.
Guests were treated to a special performance by singer Olinda Cho, who was the second runner-up in Season 1 of Singapore Idol and had recently participated in the second season of popular Chinese reality talent show Sing! China. There were also performances by the BCP Programme Committee and Professor Er Meng Hwa.
Geomancer Grandmaster Mr Tan Khoon Yong contributed a painting to the charity auction, which President Professor Andersson later won with a successful bid of $7,500. Also up for auction were some bottles of whiskey contributed by Mr Richard Goh of Megatech Industries, which raised more than $7,000.
To date, the Lee Sing Kong Endowment Fund has received more than $179,000 in donations and $500,000 in pledges. To contribute to the Lee Sing Kong Endowment Fund, please visit http://bit.ly/LeeSingKong . For enquiries, get in touch with the Development Office at 6790 4502 or maindo@ntu.edu.sg
